Astrology has been used for centuries to predict the future.  Many believe that their horoscopes will tell them how their days will go, or lead them to love, fame and fortune.  Most people today, however, just read daily horoscopes to have fun.  If you like to read your daily horoscope, you may sometimes wonder what the symbols and signs mean.

It can be confusing to those who know nothing about the zodiac to decipher a horoscope on their own.  The zodiac calender does not start with January but with the month of Aries which begins at the end of March.  The last sign on the zodiac calender is the sign of Pisces, which begins at the end of February.  Each sign is ruled by a planet, or--more correctly--a heavenly body as Cancer is ruled by the Moon and Leo by the Sun which are technically not planets.  These signs that are represented in the zodiac are actually based on the constellations that appear in the night sky.  A person's sign is dependent on the position of the sun during the month in which they were born.

There are those who think that horoscopes reveal a person's true personality.  Those born under Aries, or the Ram, are known for a childlike sense of adventure and inquisitiveness.  Taurus, the bull, symbolizes stability and stubbornness.  Those born under this sign are known for their desire for financial and emotional security.  Gemini, the twins, is a sign known for intelligence, talkativeness and curiosity that is never satisfied.  Those born under the sign of Cancer, the crab, are known for their sensitivity and a love of family.

Leos, symbolized by the lion, love to be treated royally. Virgo, the virgin, is known for compassion and caring.  Virgos are often employed in the service industries.  The Libra, symbolized by the scales, has a great love of justice and does not like inconsistency.  Scorpios, born under the sign of the scorpion, are known for their passion and desire to triumph over all adversities.  Sagittarius, symbolized by the Archer, is the sign of those who do not sit still.  Their desire to do something that makes a difference often compels them to overexert themselves when it comes to taking on projects and pursuing what they want.  The Capricorn, symbolized by the goat, is known for being hardworking and determined.  

Those born under Aquarius, the water bearer, often find themselves unable to slow their minds down.  They live so far in the future that the rest of us have trouble catching up.  Pisces, the fish, just wants somewhere to belong.  

People who read and interpret horoscopes to help them make sense to the general public are known as astrologers.  There are books available that explain astrological signs; some of them focus on general astrology and some on specific issues like love and relationships among those born under certain signs.  Some people also like using software that produces horoscopes and explains their personalities in light of their astrological signs.
